2024 Update Coming Soon

The YDSC Adult Improvers series comprises of 9 sessions and a regatta. These sessions, run from 1pm-4.30pm (please arrive at 12.30). The sessions are aimed at those graduating from beginner sessions. If you have just bought a dinghy and are needing some support then this is the one for you. It includes an introduction to racing. Use your own boats where possible, but  club training boats are available. One booking per person, so 2 needed for a double hander.

Tuition at these training sessions is free to members. However, we ask for a voluntary contribution of £10 per person per session towards the cost of fuel for the safety boats and upkeep of training boats and equipment. Please add a further £5 per session if you are using a club boat rather than your own. This will be payable when booking the session. Please bear in mind that none of the coordinators, instructors or helpers receive any financial return for their voluntary efforts.

These sessions run from 1.30-4.30pm (Please arrive by 1pm) and are run separately from the adult improvers. They follow the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme syllabuses. Participants will be working to complete their Stage 3 or 4 Certificate. The Stage 3 course is for those youngsters who have completed Stage 2 or are part way through Stage 3 and are ready to move on from the beginners group. Stage 4 for is those who have completed Stage 3. The aim is to create confident, safety aware and independent young sailors. One booking per person, so 2 needed for a double hander.  Please arrive for 1pm

If you have already attended improver sessions – have a look at the Race Development Training section for dates when you can join race development training sessions. There are also courses in the school summer holidays.

Coordinator: Steve Knight – email:

This year the courses will run as a block of 5 sessions in the summer term – (£60) and 3 sessions in the autumn term – (£35).  There will be a Stage 3 course and a Stage 4 course in each term. Participants sign up and pay for the whole block.  The autumn block may not allow time to complete all aspects of the syllabus but the instructors will sign off all sections of the logbook completed during the sessions.

RYA 2 Day Courses

YDSC is a RYA Recognised Training Centre and runs intensive 2 day courses that follow RYA syllabus and lead to RYA certificates. There is a charge OF £129 for these courses. The Level 3 course is ideal for those who have done the Level 2 but are then struggling to get going or have had a bit of a gap since they last sailed. Maybe you have just got a new boat and need help getting to grips with it, or want to learn a bit more about racing or get introduced to using a spinnaker. The course is very flexible – a refresher and refinement of Level 2 skills and then a look at things beyond depending on the needs of the participants.

These courses are only open to club members. If you are not a currently a club member you can join the club for a minimum period of 3 months in order to access the course and hopefully your experience will make you want to join the club permanently! For membership please contact and for further information on RYA courses please contact Erica Caswell at

Bookings close 7 days in advance.
